"Once our eyes are opened, we can't pretend we don't know what to do. God, who weighs our hearts and keeps our souls, knows that we know, and holds us responsible to act."

"Do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bring your children from the east and gather you from the west. I will say to the north, "Give them up!" and to the south, "Do not hold them back." Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth" Isaiah 43:5-6

"Remember those…who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering." (Hebrews 13:3)

"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…defend the rights of the needy." (Proverbs 31:8,9)

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'" Matthew 25:40
This is our journal to rescue an orphan with Down syndrome who lives in an orphanage in Eastern Europe. Anna was left at the hospital by her parents, who refused to take her home because she was born with Down syndrome. In Anna's country people with disabilities are looked down upon and are typically hidden away in orphanages from birth and their outlook for life is not very good. Once the orphan turns 4-6 depending on the region they live in, they are then transferred from the orphanage to mental institutions or insane asylums. Our family desperately wants to make Anna our daughter before she is transferred as she is already 5 years old. We will love her and give her the family that she deserves and give her a future full of hope, despite her disability. When our family stepped out in faith and committed to adopt Anna we didn't have the money that it would take to get her here. God has worked miracles in so many aspects of our adoption. The biggest miracle is that I have had faith all alone that God would send the money we needed to adopt Anna. Through many answered prayers, God made sure we had every penny we needed to make her our daughter!

There's one less orphan in the world today......

Today was "GOTCHA DAY" for our sweet Anna.  My mom and I left on Sunday for Russia and arrived on Monday.  It was late in the afternoon when we finally reached our destination and it was too late to go and visit her on Monday.  We had been told that we would go and pick up her birth certificate on Tuesday and then head out to the institution and take her into our custody on that day.  It was a crazy day of running and our facilitator thought that we should wait until Wednesday to take her with us because the passport process would take hours and it would be too much for Anna.  After we got to the institution on Tuesday the assistant director said that we could take her on Wednesday and get her passport picture made then because the weather was too bad (raining) to take her out into.  I was a little aggravated at first but it really was for the best.  It took us at LEAST 5 hours to go through the passport application process today.  I was about to pull my hair out because I was afraid they were going to try and say that it wasn't a good day to take her today either, because it was so late.  When we arrived at the institution we went into the office to talk to the director.  Our facilitator told her that we had more questions about Anna and her routine and the director said "oh I will tell you all of that in two weeks when you come back to get her when her passport is ready". Uhmmmm NO!  We will be taking her today.  She did not agree with us.  She had issues of letting go and she said this is just so weird.  We have never had any adoptions before and I am just not sure how this is supposed to take place.  So then she gets on the phone with her supervisor to find out if she has to let us take her today.  She stated that she could not find anywhere in the papers that say when we are legally allowed to take her, so our facilitator kindly showed her where it stated she is legally ours and that we could take her. So then she had to agree, but with tears, and we were allowed to take Anna from the institution to be with her forever family!!

As we were leaving with her I heard someone yell out "Nastya" (this is her nickname for Anastasia) and we turned around to find a lady with tears pouring down her face as she came over to hug Anna and tell her goodbye.  It was really, really sad. We were told that she was one Anna's caregivers and it was apparent that she loves our little girl.  It broke my heart to see these people so saddened to see our sweet girl go home to her family.  I know that their heart is breaking to lose her but I promised to send them pictures and updates often. They really seem to care for the children and adults that they have in their care and I am grateful to them for taking good care of her.

This sweet girl of mine really is a gem. I honestly could not love her more if she had came from my own body.  I mean fierce, deep love for her like she has always been mine.  Is that abnormal? I don't know.  I have read blogs about families who adopt chilren and they say that it takes time to fall in love with them and I totally can understand that. But what about me? I love her like I gave birth to her. Maybe it's because she was born to be MY daughter. God knew that for whatever reasons her parents had for giving her up, that she would one day be mine.  I think she already knows it too.  She knows that I love her and she appears to love me back :)  I can't tell you how many hugs and kisses I got today because there were too many to count!

The sweet little thing did so good today.  She hopped in the car with us and headed off for her new life like it was something she does every day!  It takes a little over an hour to drive from her institution to the city where we are staying and did all of her paperwork and court.  She did great in the car.  She ate her gummy fruit snacks and guzzled down a whole cup of juice.  She acts so thirsty...I just wonder if she was allowed enough to drink and may be dehydrated some.  Her skin is horrible.  She has sores in her scalp and scratches it like crazy.  But it gets worse.  Her feet make me cringe and I cannot imagine how they must feel.  I don't know if she is allergic to something and her feet are just raw from scratching them OR if she has some type of fungus going on with them.  She just claws at her legs and her hiney like they itch soooo bad.  BUT the child has never had a bath, so you can imagine why her skin is in the shape it is in.  They said that they give them sponge baths and I have no idea how they wash their hair.  So we gave her her first bath tonight and she did pretty well with it.  At first she was hesitant so I sat on the side of the tub and just stood her up in the bath and splashed water on her until she was comfortable enough to sit down in it.  It wasn't long and she was enjoying herself!  We got her out and greased her from head to toe with lotion in hopes that it would help with some of her itching....but I don't think it did :(  She started clawing at her feet and it made my heart hurt so bad for her.  Our facilitator has left to go back to her city while we wait for the passport so we are here trying to make it on our own.  I think we will venture down to the drugstore tomorrow and try to find something for her skin.

After we got back to our hotel we took her to the restaurant for dinner and I was curious to see how she would do with eating.  I had read about children being adopted from orphanages and that they could have a bad relationship with food such as hoarding food and gorging on it.  She did neither...but she does like to eat that's for sure!

We were told that she was potty trained but we brought pullups and diapers just in case.  She wore a pullup most of the afternoon until we could get her back to the hotel and put panties on her.  My mom tried putting her on the toilet and she became upset....afraid of the big girl toilet, ha ha! So we tromped up the street to the mall and found her a small little potty in hopes that this would cure her fear and it did!  She went to the bathroom twice before bedtime.  She has already watched her "signing time" videos and skyped with her brothers and sister.  We went to the mall and the grocery store, came home, took her bath and finally passed out on her little cot bed. I put the sweet baby in the bed with her blanky/teething rings, she layed there for about 5 minutes, then pulled the covers up over her head and went to sleep!!  I know she's over there dreaming now and thinking "please don't wake me....I think I'm in heaven!"

I CANNOT even begin to thank all of you enough who have helped us through this process to make Anna our daughter.  I promise you that we could not have done it without your love, prayers, help and support. You all mean so much to us and we are eternally grateful to each and everyone one of you!  I'm sure that Anna thanks you too! She now has a mommy and daddy who love her so much, and two brothers and a sister who cannot wait until she is home!! May God richly bless you all!!

Our new daughter.....

We proudly introduce our new daughter~

Anna Grace Williams

born into the world May 23, 2005

born into our hearts and family June 10, 2011

We had our court appointment on June 10, 2011 and the judge granted us permission to adopt our sweet girl.
It was very frightening to me to have to go to court and plea for our little girls life.  I was so afraid of possibly being badgered by the judge and prosecutor but it was actually quite the opposite. Before court our facilitator told us that we would probably be in court for 2 to 3 hours and that made me even sicker and more afraid.  When we came out of court we realized we had been in there for 4 hours!! Wow, what an experience.  After the process started I began to feel more and more comfortable and I thought this judge must really want for Anna to have a family :)  The orphanage director was the only person who objected to our adoption. I was told ahead of time about this and I realized why she objected and it made me sad.  It had nothing to do with the fact that she didn't like me or Mike, but instead she was afraid for Anna to be adopted and taken to America.  She kept saying in court she was so scared, so afraid and it's so far away.  We really feel that she cares for Anna and was afraid of something bad happening to her.  She had told our facilitator that she couldn't approve our adoption because if we adopted her and then something bad happened to her that she would feel guilty for giving her approval. Vita in turn asked how will you feel if something happens to her in your institution? Good question!

A lot of people were angry hearing that she objected to our adoption but I could feel her heart during her speech in court (we had a translator) and it made me cry.  I knew before going back to her country for court that the orphanage director was going to object to it so I put together a photo album full of pictures of our daughter Ashlyn, who also has Down syndrome, for her to see that she has a good life.  I added pictures from when she was infant up until now and she is 11 years old.  In my heart I *really* wanted to convince her that we would give her a wonderful life and love her like our own. That's a hard thing to do when you don't know the people or even speak the same language. So I just pray that God gives her peace that we are the right family for Anna and that we love her with all of our hearts.

At the end before the judge gave us the outcome he asked us if we had anything we would like to add to everything that had been said.  I quickly said no as I was all questioned out, LOL.  My husband stands up and I am thinking "oh my gosh what is he doing"?  Well bless his sweet soul....he too wanted to convince the director and everyone in court that we love her and that she WILL have a good life.  He stated that it would be hard for others to understand why we would want a child like "this", meaning disabled.  He said that people who do not already have a child with DS may not understand the love we have for our biological daughter and how much joy and love she gives us. But we do love her so much just as she is and that adopting Anna into our family is also a gift.  Yep he had me crying again.  :)  He also told the court that he understood the fear of Russians against Americans adopting their children since there have been cases of abuse and even death of Russian children adopted by Americans. But he promised them that no one would need to lose any sleep over Anna being adopted by our family and that she is already loved and VERY wanted.  Gosh, I love this man!

The judge takes a short break and while he is out the prosecutor, who looked very young, started talking to the orphanage director and told her that he had friends who lived in America for about 2 years.  He told her that they had told him of all the advantages that children with disabilities have in America.  I wanted to go and give him a hug but I just there smiling and saying thank you. It seemed that EVERYONE in the court was out to change the mind of the director, but I really don't think we did.  We were told before court that the opinion of the orphanage director would not keep us from adopting Anna but she still had to give her opinion.  Now if she had valid reasons other than being scared, the climate change and language barrier, then the court would have taken her issues more seriously.  But thank our God in heaven, the judge felt her reasons were not very good ones and granted us permission to adopt Anna. Ohhhh happy day!!!  So as of right now she is ours, in our heart and on paper, but there is also a 10 day waiting period where someone could come forward and object to our adoption. So please pray with all of your hearts that no one comes forward and we are able to go back to her country and bring sweet Anna home with us!

We thank each of you from the bottom of our hearts for helping us in all the ways that you did! Without you, this would not have happened for sweet Anna!  What an awesome gift you have given this dear, sweet child of God!
Love, the Williams family
Oh I love you too!

Please help Quinton come home!!!

****UPDATE**** They only have $4,500 left to raise!!!!
God is good!

Look at this sweet baby face! I am so burdened for this family.  I have told the story before of how his mommy-to-be came to find him.  Her name is Carol and she is my daughter's special education teacher.  She has a heart of gold and is a beautiful soul who I am so lucky to know. :)  We just met back in August 2010 when school started.  My daughter started middle school this year and this was Carol's first year teaching.  Sometime after school started I told Carol about our adoption of Anna and I gave her our blog website so that she could follow our story.  Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that she would find her way to Reece's Rainbow and find a child of her own! She and her husband Brian do not have any children yet and fell in love with cute little Quinton. In Quinton's country babies and children are abandoned at orphanages and are kept there until they turn four years old.  Once a child with a disability turns four they are transferred to mental institutions where they will live out the rest of their life, which may not be very long. Sometimes children with Down syndrome do not live one year after they are transferred to these mental institutions because of trauma, neglect and malnutrition.  So little Quinton is living on borrowed time and the Miller family is desperate to raise the needed funds in order to rescue their baby boy. They have held fundraisers and have raised most of the money but they leave in 8 days and aren’t fully funded yet.  They are holding a fundraiser right now with some wonderful prizes in hopes of raising the last $6,500 they need in order to travel.  Please stop by their blog and read their story and check out their fundraiser.  Any donations, no matter the size are deeply appreciated.  Please help save this little life if you can whether it be by prayers, donations or sharing their story.  Thank you and God bless you!

We are almost there!

We leave in three days to head to Anna's country for our court appointment! Please keep our family in your prayers for safe travel, protection for us and our children and also for our court appearance! Please join in prayer that the judge will see the love that we already have for Anna and that he will grant us the permission to make her our daughter!

So many of you have donated, held fundraisers, prayed and shared our story.  We thank each of you for everything that you have done. I am so excited to say that we are ALMOST there!  We only have $722 left to raise to be fully funded to adopt our little girl!  You all have played a part in giving this sweet little girl a family.  How awesome is that? God is so good and I thank him for moving the hearts of each of you who have prayed for us and donated to help us make this dream become reality! May God richly bless each of you!
Love,
the Williams family
